Cancer Awareness Community Champions are Specialist Topic Champions, an arm of Public Health Greenwich's wider Community Champions initiative. Champions raise awareness of cancer signs, symptoms and screening, helping residents get the information and support they need.

What the role involves

As a Cancer Awareness Champion, you will volunteer alongside Public Health Greenwich, talking to residents at events, talks, community groups, GP surgeries and other borough venues about cancer awareness and the importance of screening.

  • You choose which sessions to attend, with a minimum commitment of one to two days a month.

  • You will always volunteer as part of a team, usually in pairs.

  • No previous knowledge of health topics is needed.

  • Full training is provided, including Professional Boundaries and Safeguarding, Making Every Opportunity Count, and specialist training in cancer awareness.

What matters most is being a good communicator, comfortable engaging with a diverse range of people, and willing to work within the role's policies and procedures. You will record your engagements using simple electronic forms.

The difference you will make

You will share key health and wellbeing information with friends, family and your local community networks, helping messages reach more people across Greenwich. This helps cut through misinformation and makes sure residents know what support is available to them. Along the way, you will build your own skills and knowledge, and become part of the borough's wider community engagement network.

What the programme achieves

The Specialist Champions programme is being developed in partnership with Public Health Greenwich and draws on training from Cancer Research UK's Let's Talk Cancer programme. Champions reflect the diversity of Greenwich's population, helping residents facing particular barriers get the information and support they need. The programme continues to trial and refine where these conversations reach residents best.
