The Befriending and Emotional Wellbeing Support Project supports any adult in Greenwich experiencing loneliness, isolation, or poor mental health and wellbeing.

You can be part of this project by receiving support, or giving it as a volunteer wellbeing advisor.

I am looking for wellbeing support

Feeling isolated or low can happen to anyone, and reaching out for support is not always easy. Our wellbeing advisors are here to listen and to help you feel more connected to the people and activities around you.

Support includes regular befriending phone calls, along with encouragement to get involved in the community through Walk and Talk sessions, coffee and chat meet-ups, and a range of wellbeing activities such as art, cookery, yoga and mindfulness. See our Events page for what is coming up.

If a volunteer identifies that you need further support, they can also help connect you with other local services.

This service is free, and you can refer yourself, a family member, or someone you support.

I would like to become an Emotional Wellbeing Advisor

Do you have time to listen and a genuine interest in someone else's wellbeing? As a volunteer befriender or wellbeing advisor, you could be exactly the connection someone needs.

The role involves either a weekly phone call of up to 45 minutes, or in-person support in the community, depending on the match. All volunteers complete mandatory training, including how to support someone in accessing other services if needed.

You will also build on skills that can support your own future employment prospects.

"Thank you so very much to Volunteer Centre Greenwich for all the support provided to the residents throughout the years. Your service has filled a huge void, and I only hope it can continue for the long-term."

What the programme achieves

The project has been a lifeline for Greenwich residents since it was set up during the Covid-19 pandemic, and continues to support people through uncertain times.

Each year, the project:

  • Supports residents through personalised one-to-one emotional wellbeing support

  • Delivers a wide range of wellbeing activities, including walking groups, mindfulness, dance, art and social sessions

  • Recruits and trains new volunteers to grow the team of befrienders and wellbeing advisors

Our Walk and Talk sessions remain particularly popular, with walks along the River Thames, local parks, and guided foraging routes.
